Steelma is an alternative to the copper, steel and aluminium alloying processes, which have been around for years.
It is made by mixing stainless steel with iron, and can be used in high-tech applications such as air compressors and jet engines.
Steelma’s makers say it is cheaper to produce and easier to transport than the existing steel products, which are heavy, costly and highly flammable.
But steelma’s supporters say its advantages include higher strength and more corrosion resistance.
The main drawback is that it is very expensive to manufacture and can’t be imported from overseas, although steelmakers say it has recently become cheaper.
The steelmaking company said in a statement that it was in discussions with the Government about making steelma available for export to the EU.
